Canine Pregnancy Quick Facts
On average, most pregnancies last 9 weeks (63 days) from conception to birth.
Mother dogs can experience morning sickness, just like people.
A specialized nutrient-dense diet is important during pregnancy. Diets containing DHT have been shown to support brain growth and cognition in puppies.
Mother dogs will often grow restless and begin "nesting" by rearranging blankets, bedding, and pillows in the days leading up to birth.
Right before going into labor, a mother dog's temperature will begin to drop.
In dogs, labor can last anywhere from 6 to 24 hours on average, from start to finish!
Puppy Growth Stages

Week 1
These early days are spent nursing, sleeping, and staying close to mom for warmth. They are born with their eyes and ears still closed. Puppies are still very vulnerable at this stage.
Week 2
Puppies should be gaining weight and looking bigger each day. They will begin to move around more, and may begin moving their tails for the first time.
Week 3
By the time puppies enter their third week, their eyes and ears should be open. Their personalities start to develop, puppies will begin playing with each other for the first time, and they will start to get their first teeth.
Week 4
This is when the critical socialization period begins, which lasts until 16 weeks of age. The things puppies learn and experience from here on out will shape who they become as adults. Puppies will also begin weaning off of mother's milk and onto a soupy wet dog food.
Week 5
At 5 weeks old, puppies become more curious and explore away from mom for short periods. They are learning crucial social skills like bite inhibition as well, and are becoming much more vocal.
Week 6
By week 6, puppies are almost fully weaned and have all of their baby teeth. They can walk, run, and wrestle with their siblings with more coordination than before. They should also be having their first vet check-ups.

Week 7
Puppies continue to become more confident and independent, exploring their world with enthusiasm. Their individual personalities have sprung forth, and their overall structure can be evaluated more accurately. This is a good time for individual puppies to be matched with their new homes (if they haven't been already!), but they aren't ready to leave their mother and siblings just yet.
Week 8
By week 8, puppies will have an increased need to chew! They have developed enough to learn new basic skills and commit them to memory, such as "sit" and "come". Puppies may also enter their first fear period at this time, where previously normal stimuli become scary and stress-inducing. Positive reinforcement and avoiding huge shifts in lifestyle are important.
Week 9
In their ninth week, puppies are learning a lot about dog-dog communication skills and what constitutes appropriate behavior with other canine pals. They are fully in the throes of teething, intent on exploring their surroundings, and ready to learn more new skills like potty training. Puppies at this age still need lots of sleep throughout the day, and benefit from a solid routine.
Week 10
Week 10- time to go home! Your puppy has spent all the time they need with their siblings, parents, and breeder to have the very best start at life. They have learned a lot of key social skills, grown in confidence (and size!), and they can't wait to tumble their way into your heart. Remember, just because the puppy has left our home, you will always have our support. Please reach out if you have any training, health, or general puppy raising concerns.

Puppy Socialization
Early socialization and desensitization are a cornerstone of Highland Moor's program. Some of the things your puppy will be exposed to before they come home are:

-
Car rides
-
Other dogs
-
Small Animals
-
Children & people of varying age, gender, & ethnic presentations
-
Various sounds and textures
-
Different smells

We use a blend of Puppy Culture and Early Neurological Stimulation exercises for each one of our puppies to give them the best possible start in life.
